Fig Tree – no cover-up here!
The Fig Tree is developing a reputation as one of the Riverwalk’s best restaurants, because of its gorgeous setting, contemporary takes on classic American dishes and the great service. I heard about it even before coming to town and really wanted to give it a try.
Housed in an adorable southwestern river front hacienda, the Fig Tree had a multi-level garden with many tables seating 2-4. There are many private areas for a truly romantic setting. The menu has many choices, but from what I understand, doesn’t evolve much. This might making repeated visits a bit stale.

Started with the rustic bread and whipped butter
Following this was the lobster bisque, garnished with chopped chives and black pepper – this dish was rich and delightfully lobstery. I then had the roasted beat salad with arugula, candied walnuts, goat cheese and ginger vinaigrette. This was a dish that was as delicious as it was pretty. I only wish it wasn’t as drenched in dressing as I think it would have highlighted the roasted beats a bit more.
Next, to round out my surf and turf, I had the filet mignon. After all, I was in Texas, and steak is the state food, right? Oh, it’s chilli? Well is should be steak. This 8oz cut was a prime piece of meat, perfect done. It came with a side of mashed potatoes but by the end of the steak, I was stuffed… this was a rare occasion where there was no room for dessert. Oh well.
A great meal with fantastic service in a great location – just a shame that I dined without my sweetie, as this place has the potential to be a very romantic dining option.
